The problem

2/8 + 3/8 comes out as 5/16

Children treat a fraction as two separate whole numbers and add the tops and the bottoms, because adding is all they have practiced.

Adding the denominators too

The bottom number names the size of the pieces. Eighths plus eighths are still eighths, but many children write 16 anyway.

Top and bottom feel unrelated

If a fraction is just two stacked numbers, it is hard to see why only one of them changes when you add.

Whole-number habits are strong

Adding 2 + 3 on top and 8 + 8 on the bottom feels like one job. It takes a few worked examples to show that the pieces do not change size.

Each question keeps the pieces the same size and asks only how many there are. The wrong answer choices are the exact traps, such as 5/16, so a slip shows up and gets talked about.

Outcomes

Add fractions and keep the denominator

Same-size pieces, counted like any other objects.

  • 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8
  • 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
  • 1/7 + 1/7 = 2/7
  • 9/10 + 1/10 = 10/10 = 1
  • 1/10 + 1/10 = 2/10 = 1/5
  • 2/12 + 9/12 = 11/12
  • 3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8 = 1/2
Adding Fractions with Like Denominators: skill and grade fit

Who it’s for

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.

Parents & homeschool

Practice by saying it aloud: three eighths plus two eighths is five eighths. Pie or pizza slices on the table make the point fast.

Teachers

Use as a warm-up or exit check before unlike denominators, so the idea of unit pieces is solid first.

Intervention groups

Small groups who add the bottoms can see the error in the answer choices and explain why 5/16 is too small.

Questions

Before you buy.

Do these include unlike denominators?

No. Every problem has the same denominator, so the focus stays on one idea: pieces of the same size add up.

What if my child still adds the bottoms?

Ask what size the pieces are before and after. If the pieces changed size, something went wrong. The answer choices make that comparison easy.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 8 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.

What if it isn’t right for us?

Email support@pencillane.com within 30 days and we refund the full $3.50. No form, no questions.
