Past 10, children lose the picture they had. Facts they could count now need strategy, and signs get skipped when the numbers get bigger.
Missing the sign
Bigger numbers make children rush. A subtraction question gets added and nobody notices because the answer is still under 20.
Crossing the ten
8 + 5 stops many first graders. They count on from 8 by ones, lose track, and land on 12 or 14.
Counting on fingers past 10
When fingers run out, the child has no fallback. Building a few go-to moves, like making 10, gets them moving.
