Why get the bundle
- Seeing the same sums in cards, games and a deck gives children the repeated, varied exposure that turns counting into knowing.
The problem
Counting every number from one
Children begin by counting everything. Moving to counting on, then to recall, is the real work in this set.
Count-all every time
To solve 5 + 2, many children count 1 to 5, then keep going. It works, but it is slow and easy to miscount.
Not knowing what plus means
Plus is joining. Children who only see two numbers and a symbol may write one of them as the answer.
Adding zero and one
The 0 and 1 facts seem easy yet cause errors, such as 6 + 0 answered as 0 or 7 when the child guesses.
Small sums to 10 keep every answer countable. Children start with the bigger number and count on, which moves them from counting all toward quick recall.

- 1 + 5 = 6

- 4 + 2 = 6

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Tell short stories: three apples, two more arrive. Let your child choose fingers, counters or a drawing, then ask how they knew.
Teachers
Use for centers or independent practice after you have modeled joining groups with counters.
Kindergarten & first grade
Both grades revisit sums within 10 many times; this gives several ways to do it without repeating one page.

Questions
Before you buy.
Is this the same as addition to 5?
No. This set goes up to sums of 10, so it includes pairs like 6 + 3 and 7 + 2 where counting all becomes tiring.
Should my child use fingers?
Yes, to start. Fingers are a tool. Over time, ask them to say the bigger number first and count on, which leads to recall.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 4 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
