The problem

Does 3 + 1 mean count them all?

For a kindergartner, a plus sign is brand new. Sums to 5 help children connect objects, the symbol and the number.

Counting each group again

Children count 3, then count 1, then start over to find the total. Learning that the answer comes after the three is a big step.

Symbols without meaning

The plus and equals signs are just marks until a child ties them to putting groups together.

Short attention spans

Five-year-olds do better with small sets. A few problems at a time keeps wiggly children engaged.

Every sum stays at 5 or less, so children can touch, count and check each one. Cards keep the set small and easy to hand out.

Addition to 5: skill and grade fit

Who it’s for

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.

Parents & homeschool

Play with snack pieces or buttons. Put 3 in one hand, 1 in the other, and ask how many altogether.

Teachers

Use as a center with counters. Cards let you pull a few for a small group or send a handful home.

Pre-K to K transition

Children getting ready for kindergarten can practice joining small groups with objects before the written signs.

Questions

Before you buy.

Is the written form too early?

Start with objects and talk. The cards give a number sentence to match, so children link what they did to what is written.

What comes after addition to 5?

Addition to 10 is the next step. Number bonds to 5 and subtraction to 5 make good companions.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 5 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.

What if it isn’t right for us?
