Why get the bundle
- Bundle practice moves from finding adverbs to using them, so the how-words show up later in writing.
The problem
Adverbs hiding in plain sight: 'sang loudly'
Adverbs often come after the verb and end in -ly, but children look at nouns first. Telling how an action happens is a new idea.
Overlooking the how-word
In 'The girl sang loudly,' third graders circle 'girl' or 'sang' because those are the words they notice.
Picking the verb instead
The adverb sits next to the verb it describes. Children mix up the action and the word telling how.
Not every how-word ends in -ly
'Quietly' is easy to spot. Words like 'fast' or 'hard' carry no -ly, so children who hunt for the ending miss them.
Short sentences ask children to find the word that tells how the action happens, with the verb among the choices so they have to tell them apart.

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Say the sentence, then ask 'how did she sing?' The answer is the adverb.
Teachers
Use after the adjective and adverb sort for 2nd-3rd graders, as a quick identification station or exit check.
Struggling with parts of speech
Pair the flash cards with a highlighter. Highlighting the how-word makes the pattern visible.

Questions
Before you buy.
Why is the verb included in the choices?
So children practice telling the action from the word describing it. That is the mistake that comes up most.
Do I need to teach the -ly trick first?
No. The sample sentences use words like loudly, quietly and slowly, and the question 'how did it happen?' is what children learn to ask.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 11 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
