The problem

Dog's collar, dogs' collars, and a very confused third grader

The apostrophe goes in a different place for one owner than for many. Children know it shows belonging, but not where to put it.

Before or after the s?

'The dog's collar' and 'the dogs' collars' differ by one mark. Kids put it wherever it feels right.

Plural s means possessive

Children add an apostrophe to any word ending in s, writing 'the cat's are asleep' for plain plurals.

Rewriting is a leap

Turning 'the bowl of one cat' into 'the cat's bowl' means flipping the order of the words. That is a lot to hold.

Each item shows the owner as a phrase, 'the collar of one dog,' and the child picks the matching possessive, so one versus many is visible.

  • one girl owns it: girl's
  • two girls own them: girls'
  • one boy owns it: boy's
Apostrophes: One Owner and More Than One: skill and grade fit

Who it’s for

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.

Parents & homeschool

Say the phrase aloud first. 'The bowl of one cat' leads to 'the cat's bowl.' Kids hear the rule before they see it.

Teachers

A 2nd-3rd grade conventions center, useful before editing writing for apostrophe errors.

Editing practice

Children who overuse apostrophes can use the bingo and cards to slow down and ask: one owner, or more than one?

Questions

Before you buy.

Does this cover both singular and plural possessives?

Yes. The sample items pair one owner with two owners, such as the dog's collar and the dogs' collars, so children see both.

Is this the same as contractions?

No. Contractions replace letters. This is about showing that something belongs to someone, a separate use of the apostrophe.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 13 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
