Why get the bundle
- Area and perimeter need to be practiced side by side. Cards, games and checks put them in different settings so children learn to pick the right one.
The problem
Area or perimeter, which one is it?
Both involve the same rectangle and the same side lengths. It is easy to apply the wrong measurement to the right shape.
Adding all four sides for area
Children add 14 + 6 + 14 + 6 and call it area. Perimeter is the distance around; area is the space inside.
Squares versus units
Area is counted in square units; perimeter in plain length units. A mixed-up label is a clue that the idea is mixed up.
Stopping after two sides
For the perimeter of a rectangle, some children add length and width and stop. Two more sides are still left to add.
Questions ask clearly for area or perimeter, with answer choices built from the common mix-ups, such as adding when you should multiply. Seeing both keeps the two ideas apart.

Tell area from perimeter and find each
Multiply for area, add around for perimeter.

- 11 × 6 = 66 sq cm
- 14 × 18 = 252 sq cm
- 20 × 4 = 80 sq cm
- 10 × 19 = 190 sq cm
- 4 × 3 = 12 sq cm
- 10 × 12 = 120 sq cm

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Draw a rectangle on graph paper. Walk around the edge with a finger for perimeter, then fill it in for area.
Teachers
Use after teaching both ideas, so students must decide which operation fits instead of repeating one rule.
Math centers
Games and cards let pairs argue it out: which one did the question ask for, and how do you know?

Questions
Before you buy.
Are these just numbers, or shapes too?
The questions give a rectangle's side lengths and ask for area or perimeter. Pair them with a drawing or grid paper for extra support.
Do I need to teach the formulas first?
It helps to have seen both ideas. The wrong choices are meant to show when a child mixes up the operations.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 13 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
