Why get the bundle
- Cards and flash practice let children see equal groups many times, which is what makes the later move to times tables feel familiar.
The problem
Three rows of four, but they wrote 3 + 4
An array is a new picture for adding, and children easily mix up the number of rows with the number in each row.
Rows versus columns
Children can describe the array as 2 + 3 instead of 3 + 3. Matching rows to the repeated number is what links it to multiplication.
Counting every dot
Without the idea of equal rows, each array becomes a long count-by-one job with plenty of chances to slip.
Not yet an equal-groups idea
Repeated addition only works when every row is the same size. Children need to notice that before they can skip count.
Each array is matched to an addition sentence like 4 + 4 + 4. Children see how rows turn into addends, which prepares them for multiplication later.

Write repeated addition for an array
Turn equal rows into an addition sentence.
- 2 rows of 2 → 2 + 2 = 4
- 2 rows of 3 → 3 + 3 = 6
- 2 rows of 4 → 4 + 4 = 8
- 2 rows of 5 → 5 + 5 = 10
- 2 rows of 6 → 6 + 6 = 12
- 2 rows of 7 → 7 + 7 = 14
- 2 rows of 8 → 8 + 8 = 16

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Arrange buttons or coins into equal rows on the table. Ask: how many rows, how many in each, what is the addition sentence?
Teachers
Fits a second-grade lesson on equal groups, just before multiplication is formally named.
Early multiplication prep
Third graders who still count dots one by one benefit from a quick return to arrays.

Questions
Before you buy.
Does this teach multiplication?
It prepares for it. Children write repeated addition for arrays, which is the idea behind multiplication, without the times sign taking center stage.
How many rows and columns are used?
Small arrays, such as 2 rows of 2, 3 or 4, so counting, adding and checking all stay manageable.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 10 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
