How do I get the files?
- The download link is on the order page the moment you pay, and in your inbox at the same time
- Re-download from that link any time — no account needed
- Wrong or broken file? Email support@pencillane.com and we fix it or refund you
Why get the bundle
- Phonological awareness grows with variety. Games, bingo and task cards let you rehearse the same sound match in new ways, which keeps preschoolers engaged.
The problem
Cash starts like ... cob? Children match letters, not sounds
Hearing that two words begin the same takes ears, not eyes. Preschoolers often match by meaning or rhyme, or by the picture, instead of the first sound.
Rhyme gets in the way
Asked to match 'pop', a child might choose 'top' because it rhymes. The ending sounds jump out before the beginning.
Spelling sounds confuse
'Cash' starts with /k/, like 'cob'. Children who expect the same letter may miss that kit and keg also start with /k/.
Holding two words in mind
The child must keep one word in mind while hearing others. That working memory is a stretch for a four-year-old.
Prompts like 'cash starts like ___' give three words. Children say each aloud and listen for the same first sound, which trains the ear before any letter work.

Questions
Before you buy.
Does my child need to know letters first?
No. This is a listening task. Children match what they hear, which is the skill that comes before connecting sounds to letters.
Why do some matches have different letters?
Because /k/ is spelled c in cash and k in kit. Matching by sound first helps children later when letter patterns change.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
