What’s inside this download
- 30 question slides, one question per slide
- A type-in answer box on every question
- A title slide and an answer key slide at the end
- One .pptx file — opens in Google Slides and PowerPoint
Why choose this over a free activity
- Three choices include a digraph answer for stronger listening
- Short words only, so decoding doesn't get in the way
- Pure sounds are modeled without extra vowel, so blending is easier
- No printing — works on a laptop, tablet or classroom screen
License and file format
- One .pptx file; upload it to Google Drive to open it in Google Slides
- One teacher or one household. Use it with your own students, this year and next
- Sharing the file itself needs a separate license
- Digital download — nothing ships
How do I get the files?
- The download link is on the order page the moment you pay, and in your inbox at the same time
- Re-download from that link any time — no account needed
- Wrong or broken file? Email support@pencillane.com and we fix it or refund you
Why get the bundle
- First sounds become habit with repeat looks. Flash cards for quick drills, games for partners and an assessment page help you see which letters are secure.
The problem
Lug starts with /l/, but he says 'luh-g' and writes it with a u
Isolating the first sound of a word is the first piece of phonemic awareness. Kids often hear syllables and rhymes but not the single sound at the start.
Letter names vs. sounds
Asked for the sound in 'dock', a child may say 'dee' instead of /d/. The name pulls louder than the sound.
Added vowel sounds
Many children say 'luh' or 'buh' for /l/ and /b/. The extra vowel makes blending later harder.
Tricky starters
Some words begin with a digraph, like th in 'thin'. Children expect one letter and give only the first sound they hear.
Each page gives a picture-free prompt word and asks for its first sound as a letter. Letter choices, including digraphs like th, make children stop and listen.
What’s inside

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Play 'I spy' with first sounds: 'I spy something that starts with /l/.' It builds the same skill without paper.
Teachers
Use as a literacy center or exit check once letter sounds have been taught.
RTI & intervention
Targets the first phonemic skill struggling readers often miss before decoding.

Questions
Before you buy.
What if my child says the letter name?
Gently model the sound, clipped short: /d/, not 'duh'. Ask them to say the whole word first, then the first sound.
Are there tricky words with two-letter sounds?
Yes. Some answers are digraphs like th and sh, so children learn that one sound can take two letters.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
What if it isn’t right for us?
