The problem

Is 0.5 bigger or smaller than 0.45?

Whole-number habits say longer means bigger. With decimals, that habit gives the wrong answer.

More digits means bigger

0.45 has more digits than 0.5, so children pick it. Tenths are bigger than hundredths, so 0.5 is the greater.

0.3 and 0.30

Children think a trailing zero changes the value. Learning that they are equal takes seeing them side by side.

Ignoring place value

Decimals compare from the left, tenths first. A child comparing 2.64 and 6.35 has to see the ones digits first.

Each question asks <, = or > for two decimals. Children line up digits by place, starting from the left, and learn to add a zero to see them match.

What’s inside

63 pages across 6 resources.

Comparing decimals needs repeated exposure to the lined-up digits idea. Different formats keep that idea in front of children.

Fits a fourth-grade decimals unit, after tenths and hundredths are introduced.

Tutors & intervention

Place value gaps show up fast here. The problems reveal if a child is reading digits instead of values.

Questions

Before you buy.

Do these include equal pairs?

Yes. The = option appears, so children cannot guess that one is always bigger.

Do the problems use money?

No. They compare plain decimals such as 0.47 and 0.82 or 2.64 and 6.35, so the focus stays on place value.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. 6 PDFs with 63 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.

What if it isn’t right for us?
