Why get the bundle
- Comparing fractions is a skill that needs many looks. Cards, cut-and-paste and games give children the practice with different angles.
The problem
Is 1/8 bigger than 1/3?
The bigger denominator looks bigger. It is one of the most stubborn fraction mistakes.
Bigger bottom means bigger fraction
Children see 8 and 3 and decide 1/8 is larger. The pieces get smaller as the denominator grows.
Same top, same bottom
When tops match, the smaller denominator wins. When bottoms match, the larger numerator wins. Children mix these up.
Using one half as a benchmark
Whether a fraction is more or less than 1/2 is a quick way to compare 2/4 and 6/9. Few children use it unprompted.
Each question asks <, = or > for two fractions, with pairs that need reasoning about size, not just computing. Children use the benchmark and same-part tricks.

Compare fractions and say why
Use pieces, benchmarks and same-size parts.

- 4/9 = 36/81 and 5/9 = 45/81
- 1/5 = 2/10 and 1/2 = 5/10

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Cut paper strips into thirds and eighths. Ask your child to hold up 1/3 and 1/8 and see which is longer.
Teachers
Fits a third or fourth grade fractions unit. Use for centers where partners must explain the symbol they chose.
Fraction intervention
Students stuck on bigger-denominator-is-bigger can use these to rethink piece size.

Questions
Before you buy.
Are the fractions like or unlike?
Both appear: some share a numerator or denominator, others need a benchmark.
Do I need fraction strips?
They help a lot. The problems also work with a drawing or a number line.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 9 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
