Why get the bundle
- Comparing to 100 benefits from many looks. Cards, games and a digital deck give children different ways to practice the tens-first habit.
The problem
Why is 39 less than 41 when 9 is bigger than 1?
With two-digit numbers, children can compare the wrong digits. Tens decide first, even when the ones look bigger.
Looking at ones first
In 39 and 41, the 9 beats the 1, so some children choose 39. Compare the tens digit first.
One digit versus two
4 and 83 are easy for a child who sees there are fewer digits. They get confused when the digits look similar, like 4 and 14.
Reversed digits
Pairs like 27 and 72 use the same digits. Children need place value, not just recognition, to compare them.
Every problem asks >, < or = for numbers up to 100. Children learn to compare tens, then ones if they match.

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Write two numbers on cards. Ask which has more tens. If the tens match, look at the ones. Make it a game with a deck of number cards.
Teachers
Fits a first or second grade place-value unit. Use as a check that students really use tens and ones.
Place-value support
Students who can read numbers but cannot compare them often need exactly this tens-first thinking.

Questions
Before you buy.
Are the numbers within 100?
Yes, one- and two-digit numbers appear together, so the child compares sizes, not just digit positions.
Is there an equal sign option?
Yes, all three symbols are offered each time, so a child must think rather than guess.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 8 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
