The problem

Is 12 bigger than 21?

Teen numbers are a place where kindergartners and first graders slip. The digits are small but the order matters.

Flipped digits

12 and 21 use the same digits, and children easily pick the wrong one. The first digit tells how many tens.

The symbol points the wrong way

Even when children know which is bigger, the open end of the symbol gets drawn facing the smaller number.

Teens versus single digits

20 compared with 8 or 15 compared with 4 sounds easy, but only if a child knows teen numbers are bigger than all single digits.

Each question asks for >, < or = with numbers up to 20. The teens are included, so children learn that a ten plus some ones is bigger than any ones alone.

Who it’s for

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.

Parents & homeschool

Use number cards with ten frames. Ask which number has a full frame plus more. Then pick the symbol.

Teachers

Use in the middle of a kindergarten or first-grade unit, when children have met teen numbers and can use ten frames.

Mixed-age groups

Because the numbers span 1 to 20, children at different levels can work on the same page.

Questions

Before you buy.

Is this the same as Comparing Numbers to 10?

No. This one adds the teens and 20, where the digit order matters.

What if my child can only compare to 10?

Start with the to-10 set, then come here when teens feel familiar.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. 6 PDFs with 68 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
