The problem
'I wanted to play ___ it rained'
Second and third graders use 'and' for everything. 'But,' 'because' and 'or' do different jobs, and the blank forces a choice.
'And' for everything
A child writes 'I wanted to play and it rained.' The sentence runs on, but the logic is lost.
Reasons versus choices
'Because' gives a reason and 'or' offers a choice. Kids don't always pause to ask which one the sentence needs.
Close-sounding options
With several conjunctions offered, children pick the first that sounds fine, not the one that makes sense.
Each sentence has a blank and a few joining words. The child reads the whole sentence with each option, and picks the one that makes sense.
What’s inside
30 questions, one per slide.
Students type straight into the box — no printing, no cutting.
Conjunctions: and, but, or, so, because

Title to answer key
A title slide first, the answer key last.
Google Slides & PowerPoint
One .pptx file that opens in both.

Outcomes
Chooses the joining word that fits
Reads a sentence with a blank and picks 'but,' 'because' or 'or' to match the meaning.
- I wanted to play ___ it rained
- Put on a coat ___ it is cold
- Do you want milk ___ juice
- It rained ___ we stayed inside
- I like cats ___ dogs
- She was tired ___ she kept running
- We ran fast ___ we missed the bus

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Read each option aloud in the sentence. If it sounds odd, it is wrong. Listening is the strategy.
Teachers
A 2nd-3rd grade grammar task for small groups, then the assessment to check.
Developing writers
Choosing the right conjunction is the first step in writing longer, clearer sentences.

Questions
Before you buy.
What formats are available?
Task cards, an assessment, and a Google Slides deck, all with answer keys.
Is this the same as combining sentences?
Not exactly. Here the child fills one blank. Combining sentences starts with two complete sentences and joins them.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
