Why get the bundle
- Practicing the same coin combinations in cards, flashcards and checks helps children hold the values in memory.
The problem
Penny plus dime makes 11, but how?
Coins break the one-at-a-time counting children know. Each coin has its own value and the total depends on counting by that value.
Counting each coin as one
A penny, nickel and dime become 3. Children need to say 1, 5, 10 and add, not tally the coins.
Starting from the wrong coin
Counting 1, 6, 16 works if you begin with the biggest. Starting small and skipping around creates mistakes.
Nickel and dime look alike
Both are silver. Children need to look at size and details rather than color to tell a nickel from a dime.
Each question names two coins to combine and asks for the total in cents. Children practice saying the value of each coin and counting on from the biggest.

Parents & homeschool
Use real coins in a bowl. Put two out, name each, and say the total. Try a penny and a dime, then a nickel and a dime.
Teachers
Use during a money unit after coins are named. Cards and flash practice fit a center or a quick review.
Second-grade review
Students who can name coins but not total them find this set a gentle next step.
