The problem
Bag, big or bug? He reads the first letter and guesses the rest
When a page mixes all five short vowels, children can't rely on one pattern. They must look at the vowel in every word instead of just the first letter.
First-letter guessing
Seeing b, a child says 'bat' for bag, bug or big. Mixed vowels expose the habit of guessing from the start.
Short vowels sound alike
Short e and i, and short a and e, are close. A word like pen or pin trips even careful readers.
Sounds, no blend
Some children say each sound, b-a-g, but can't push them into one word. Blending is a separate skill.
Words with all five short vowels are mixed together. Children have to check the middle letter and blend each word, which is the real work of CVC reading.
