Why get the bundle
- Short a is the first of five. The bundle adds cards, games and assessment so children read the same words in many ways before moving on.
The problem
Bat, bag, can: reading short a without 'buh-a-tuh'
Short a is the first vowel most children meet, and a good place to learn blending. Letter-by-letter sounding often slows a child down.
Sounding out, no blending
A child says /b/ /a/ /t/ and stops. Pushing the sounds together into 'bat' is the leap.
Extra vowel sounds
Saying 'buh' for /b/ makes 'buh-a-tuh'. Clipped consonants blend more smoothly.
Name vs. sound
Children who learned the letter name 'ay' may say it for a. The short sound /a/ is a separate thing.
Pages use short a words only, such as bag, bat and can. With one vowel, children can focus on blending sounds into a word.

Questions
Before you buy.
Why only short a?
One vowel at a time reduces confusion. Short a is common and easy to say, so it's a good first choice.
What if my child sounds out but can't blend?
Try continuous sounds first, like /mmm/ and /sss/, and slide the sounds together. Short practice helps more than long.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
