How do I get the files?

- Re-download from that link any time — no account needed
- Wrong or broken file? Email support@pencillane.com and we fix it or refund you
Why get the bundle
- Short i is repeated across formats in the bundle, and an assessment shows if i and e are still blurring in your child's reading.
The problem
Big, bin, bit: short i and e swap places
Short i is easy to confuse with short e, and children also mix it with the long i they hear in 'bike'.
I or e?
Children may read 'big' as 'beg'. Both are quick sounds in the front of the mouth.
Long vs. short i
Children who know 'eye' as the letter name may read 'bit' as 'bite'. The short sound is /ih/.
Look-alike endings
In -ig, -in and -it, the end consonants differ by small mouth shapes. Words like bin and bit get swapped.
Only short i words are used, like big, bin and bit. Children hear one vowel many times, so it sits firmly before they meet it with others.
What’s inside
30 questions, one per slide.
Students type straight into the box — no printing, no cutting.

RTI & intervention

Questions
Before you buy.
Why does my child read 'bit' as 'bite'?
They're using the letter name instead of the short sound. Remind them that a single vowel between consonants usually says its short sound.
Do I need to teach silent e first?
No. Short i comes first. Silent e words like bite come later, so this page stays with the short sound.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
