The problem
Bug, bun, bus: short u is easy to say and easy to confuse
Short u is common in early words, but it looks like n and sounds like o to some children. Careful looking helps.
U and o
Children may read 'bug' as 'bog'. The short sounds are close, especially in some accents.
u or n?
In a quick glance, u and n are flipped shapes. Children sometimes read 'bun' as 'bnu' or confuse the letters.
Name vs. sound
The letter name 'you' isn't the sound. Short u says /uh/, as in bus.
Only short u words appear, like bug, bun and bus. With one vowel throughout, children focus on blending and on the u shape.
