Why get the bundle
- Au stays secure with more looks. The bundle offers more formats and an assessment so children read au every time.
The problem
Daughter, sausage, pause: au says /aw/, and the gh is silent
Au is a vowel pair that glides into /aw/. Children read a and u separately, or expect the long a they know from 'ai'.
Reading a, then u
A child says /a/ /u/ and gets 'ah-oo-gh-ter'. Au is one sound, /aw/.
Au or aw?
Pause and paw, haul and hawk. Both say /aw/, so children can't tell which to spell by ear.
Irregular neighbors
In 'daughter', gh is silent. Beginners try to say it and the word falls apart.
Only au words are included, such as daughter, sausage and pause. Children see au in the middle and learn to read it as /aw/.

Questions
Before you buy.
What's the difference between au and aw?
They say the same sound. Au is usually inside words, and aw comes at the end or before n or l.
Is 'daughter' too hard?
It has a silent gh, so it's tricky. It shows children how the sound pattern works inside a longer word.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 8 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
