The problem
Oink, join, joint: reading o and i as two sounds
Oi glides from /o/ to /i/ in one sound. Children who read each letter say 'oh-ink' and lose the word.
Two letters, two sounds
A child reads /o/ /i/ and says 'oh-ink' for oink. Oi is a single sound.
Oi or oy
Both say /oi/. Oi is in the middle, and oy is at the end. Spelling by ear leaves children guessing.
Joint and join
Words that look alike, join and joint, share a letter pattern. Children must check the end.
