The problem
Clown, owl, flower: ow says /ow/, but 'snow' says /o/
Ow has two sounds. In clown it says /ow/, and in snow it says long o. Children have to try both.
Two sounds, one spelling
Ow in 'clown' is /ow/, and in 'snow' it's /o/. A child who learns one reads the other wrong.
Ow or ou
Both say /ow/. Ow often sits at the end of a word or before n, l, r.
Flower
In 'flower', ow is followed by er. Children may read the word as 'flow-er' with the long o.
Only ow words with /ow/ are included, such as clown, owl and flower. Children see the pattern before meeting the long o sound.
