The problem
Oink, loud, jaw, boy: six vowel pairs that glide
Diphthongs, such as oi, oy, ou, ow, au and aw, glide from one sound to another. Children must know which pair they have.
Six spellings, three sounds
Oi and oy say /oi/. Ou and ow say /ow/. Au and aw say /aw/. Children must remember which spelling goes where.
Reading each letter
The habit of reading letter by letter breaks diphthongs. 'Boy' becomes 'bo-y'.
Position clues
Oy and aw end words, and oi and au sit inside. Children can use these clues to choose.
Words with all six diphthongs are mixed. Children check the vowel pair and read it as one gliding sound.
