Why get the bundle
- Having cards and a poster together lets children see the strategy and then try it themselves.
The problem
7 + 8, but you only know 7 + 7
Near-doubles are a shortcut children can use for hard facts, if they see the double inside the problem.
Not spotting the double
In 3 + 4 children don't notice it's one more than 3 + 3. They count on and sometimes slip.
Adding one too many times
After doubling, some children add one, then add the other number again, ending up two too high.
Which double to start from
6 + 7 is double 6 plus one, or double 7 minus one. Choosing one and sticking to it keeps things clear.
Each item is a near-double with a hint of the double inside. Children say: double 3 is 6, plus 1 makes 7. The same steps work every time.

Use a double to find a near-double
Double the smaller number, then add one.
- double 1 is 2, plus 1 more = 3
- double 2 is 4, plus 1 more = 5
- double 3 is 6, plus 1 more = 7
- double 4 is 8, plus 1 more = 9
- double 5 is 10, plus 1 more = 11
- double 6 is 12, plus 1 more = 13
- double 7 is 14, plus 1 more = 15
