Why get the bundle
- Fractions start with a few ideas seen many times. Cards and flash cards give children short rounds of the same simple fractions.
The problem
Cut into two pieces, but is it halves?
Early fractions depend on equal parts. Children name a fraction whenever a shape is cut, even if the parts are different sizes.
Counting uneven pieces
A shape cut into two unequal pieces is not halves. Children count pieces and ignore size.
What top and bottom mean
In 2/3 the 3 tells how many equal parts and the 2 tells how many are shaded. Children swap them.
New names for old shapes
Half, third and fourth are words children rarely use. Each has to be linked to 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.
Each card shows a fraction, such as 1 of 2 equal parts or 2 of 3, and asks children to match the idea to the number. Words and numbers appear together so each fraction gets a name.
