The problem
What comes before b? He knows c comes after, but 'before' is backwards
Going forward in the alphabet is easy because the song goes that way. Going backward means leaving the song and thinking about the line of letters.
Backwards is harder
The alphabet song only goes forward. 'Before' asks a child to step back, which the tune never practices.
Look-alike lowercase
b and d, or p and q, swap places easily. Lowercase letters with mirror shapes make the task trickier.
Seeing the pattern
With prompts like __ b c, children need to look at what follows and think about what came first.
Each page shows two lowercase letters with a blank before them. Children use the letters that follow to work out the one that came first.
