Why get the bundle
- Vowel sounds need a lot of repeat. Cards, games and an assessment help you see which vowels still get mixed up, so you can focus on those.
The problem
Cash, kit, pop: why do the middle sounds slip away?
The middle of a short word is the hardest sound to hear. Children catch the start, sometimes the end, and lose the vowel in between.
Vowels sound alike
Short a, e and i are close in sound. Many children hear 'pen' and 'pin' as the same word.
The middle is hidden
In a word like 'kit', the vowel is squeezed between two consonants. Children must slow the word down to hear it.
Letter names get in
Asked for the middle sound in 'pop', a child may say 'oh' instead of the short o. The name is louder than the sound.
Each page gives a short word and asks for its middle vowel. Words come from all five short vowels, so children must listen, not guess from the first letter.

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Stretch words together, 'k-i-i-t', and ask which sound is in the middle. Slow, exaggerated speech helps.
Teachers
Use as a bridge from beginning sounds to full CVC decoding in a literacy block.
RTI & intervention
Targets the vowel, the sound that struggling readers most often get wrong.

Questions
Before you buy.
Why is the middle sound so hard?
The vowel blends tightly with the consonants on either side. Children have to slow the word and listen for the sound in the center.
Does my child need to read?
Not yet. It's a listening task. Children hear the word and choose the vowel, building the skill behind CVC reading.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 15 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
