Why get the bundle
- Hidden-number problems help children see addition and subtraction as one idea. The bundle's games and cards give many chances.
The problem
13 + ? = 18, and the answer is 31
A hidden number within 20 is harder than within 10, because counting up on fingers runs out and the sums cross ten.
Adding the numbers shown
In 13 + ? = 18, a child adds 13 and 18 and writes 31. The 18 is the total, not a part.
Counting up past ten
5 + ? = 11 crosses ten. Counting up from 5 on fingers is slow and easy to miscount.
Not seeing the subtraction
18 - 13 gives the missing number. Few first graders see that a hidden-number problem and a take-away problem match.
Each item gives a part and a total and asks for the other part. Children count up in chunks, use a fact they know or subtract, and check by adding.
What’s inside

Teachers
Fits first grade after addition to 20. Use bingo and games for centers.
Fact-family thinking
A good set for linking addition and subtraction.

Questions
Before you buy.
Do children need subtraction first?
No. Counting up works, and the problems also invite subtraction.
Do the sums cross ten?
Yes. Problems like 5 + ? = 11 cross ten, so children use more than finger counting.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
