The problem
20 = 3 + ?, and the answer is 17
Bonds to 20 are big. Children who know the pairs to 10 can use them, but they do not always see how.
Counting up from the part
3 + ? = 20 means counting 17 on fingers. A child needs a quicker way.
Not using bonds to 10
7 + 13 = 20 uses 7 + 3 = 10. Children do not notice the link.
A gap that is too large
A missing 17 is hard to guess. Thinking in tens makes the gap manageable.
Each item gives a part and asks for the other part of 20. Children use bonds to 10 and tens thinking to find the answer.
What’s inside
19 questions, one per slide.
Students type straight into the box — no printing, no cutting.
