The problem

8 + 4 x 4 is 24, not 48

Reading left to right is the habit children bring to every page. With mixed operations it leads to the wrong answer.

Adding first

In 8 + 4 x 4, adding first gives 12 x 4 = 48. Multiplying 4 x 4 first gives 16, and 8 + 16 = 24.

Left to right feels right

Children read a sentence from left to right, so they solve it that way. The rule is different for math.

Subtraction after multiplication

In 3 x 2 - 5, multiply first to get 6, then subtract 5. Children who go left to right may try 2 - 5.

Each item has a wrong choice that comes from going left to right, so the slip shows. A poster keeps the order in view.

Outcomes

Solve by doing multiplication first

Multiply, then add or subtract.

  • 4 × 4 = 16, then 8 + 16 = 24
  • 6 × 4 = 24, then 2 + 24 = 26
  • 3 × 2 = 6, then 6 − 5 = 1
  • 5 × 2 = 10, then 10 − 5 = 5
  • 7 × 4 = 28, then 4 + 28 = 32
  • 8 × 6 = 48, then 48 − 9 = 39
  • 7 × 9 = 63, then 63 − 9 = 54

Questions

Before you buy.

Are parentheses included?

The set builds the basic idea: multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.

Is there a poster?

Yes. The poster lists which operation to do first.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 3 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
