Why get the bundle
- Position words are useful in many parts of the day. A bundle lets you add counting and number-order sets so ordinals connect to number sense.
The problem
Third in line is one child, not three
Ordinal words name a position, and young children hear them as ordinary counting words. First, second and third do not even sound like one, two and three.
Circling three, not the third
Asked to point to the third duck, a child circles three ducks. The word names one place in the line, not a count.
Odd words at the start
First, second and third break the pattern. Fourth to tenth add -th, but the first three have to be learned by heart.
Which end is first?
Position depends on where the line starts. Children need a clear starting point before first means anything.
Each card pairs a number with its ordinal word, from first to tenth. Children read the number, say the word, and learn that the word tells where something stands.
