The first pattern children meet is AB. Many point to a shape at random because they have not yet heard the back-and-forth.
Choosing without a rule
Preschoolers point to any shape that looks good. The idea of a repeat is new.
Matching, not continuing
A child can copy a pattern next to the original but may not know how to extend it into empty space.
Rhythm helps
Saying 'circle, square, circle, square' as a rhythm lets young children hear the pattern.
