The problem

Kindergarten phonics: first sounds, rhymes, first sight words

Kindergartners must hear sounds in spoken words, link them to letters, and also memorize a first set of words that cannot be sounded out.

First sound is easy, last sound is not

Children say 'cat' starts with 'c' but guess at the ending. Ending sounds and middle vowels need their own work.

Rhyme is an ear skill

Some kids hear that 'cat' and 'hat' rhyme but cannot yet produce one. Games make this less abstract.

Sight words
