The problem

Singing the alphabet song without knowing a single letter

Preschoolers can sing A to Z yet not tell M from N. Letters are small abstract shapes, and each has two forms and a sound.

Upper and lowercase look unrelated

B and b, G and g, Q and q hardly resemble each other. Matching them takes many looks.
