Why get the bundle
- A bundle with posters, clip cards and flash cards gives children the prefix idea in many forms, so they can use it for new words.
The problem
Un + happy: a word part that flips meaning
Second graders read 'unhappy' as one word. Seeing the prefix un- turns a big word into something they can figure out.
Prefix looks like part of the word
'Unlock' reads as one chunk. Children don't see 'un' and 'lock' as separate.
Wrong prefix, wrong word
Choices like 'dislike' or 'misspell' sit beside 'unhappy.' Kids need to build the right word from the right pieces.
Meaning gets lost
Knowing that un- means 'not' is the point. Without it, children just memorize word lists.
Pages show a prefix plus a base word, such as un + kind, and the child builds the new word, learning that un- changes the meaning.
