The problem
71 is prime, but 9 is not, and both are odd
Many children believe every odd number is prime. Deciding takes a quick check for factors, not a glance at the last digit.
Odd means prime
9, 15 and 21 are odd, yet 3 divides each one. Children who equate odd with prime get these wrong.
The special cases
1 is neither prime nor composite, and 2 is the only even prime. These exceptions need to be named, not guessed.
Larger numbers need a method
To decide about 71 or 89, a child has to test small divisors like 2, 3, 5 and 7, rather than trust a hunch.
Each question gives a number and asks prime or composite. Children test for a factor other than 1 and the number itself, and use arrays or facts to say why.

US Letter 8.5 × 11 · PDFWho it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Make arrays with counters. A number that only makes one row, like 7, is prime. Try 9, 12 and 17.
Teachers
Fits fourth grade after factors and multiples. The cut-and-paste sort makes a good center.
Number-theory practice
Students who know their times tables can use them to rule numbers out quickly.

Questions
Before you buy.
Does the set include larger primes?
Yes. Numbers such as 71 and 89 appear, so children must check divisors, not assume.
What do I need to know first?
Multiplication facts and the idea of a factor. Factors and Multiples is a good lead-in.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. 7 PDFs with 75 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
