The problem
Horse, north, cork: or says /or/, and a silent e hides in 'horse'
Or says /or/, as in fork. Children who read o and r separately say 'oh-r' and lose the word.
Reading o, then r
A child says /o/ /r/ for or. Or makes one sound, as in corn and fork.
Horse and silent e
In 'horse', the e at the end isn't making the o long. It's part of the word.
Or and ar
A quick look can turn 'cork' into 'cark'. The two look alike but sound different.
Only or words are included, such as horse, north and cork. Children see or at the front, middle and end of words and learn it as one sound.
