The problem
Turtle, burp, urn: ur is one more way to spell /er/
Ur says /er/, like er and ir. Children can't tell which spelling to use by ear, so they must see it.
Same sound as er and ir
Fur, her and fir all say /er/. Children write 'fur' as 'fer'.
Turtle
In 'turtle', ur is followed by tle. Children read the ur and stumble on the ending.
Burp and urn
