Why get the bundle
- Cards, color-by-code and games give children more chances to see that the tens digit is the one to check.
The problem
1361 rounds to 1400, not 1300
Rounding to hundreds means checking the tens digit, not the ones. Many children look at the wrong place.
Looking at the ones digit
In 1361, the ones digit is 1 but the tens digit 6 decides. A child who checks the 1 rounds down.
Changing the right digits
1361 becomes 1400: the hundreds go up by one and the tens and ones turn to zero.
Rounding small numbers
138 rounds to 100, because 3 tens is below halfway. Some children expect it to go up.
Each question asks for the nearest hundred. Children look at the tens digit, adjust the hundreds, and replace the rest with zeros.
