Why get the bundle
- Names stick when children see them on the wall, in the hand and on a quick check. The bundle puts all of those together.
The problem
A rectangle is not a heart, and a tilted square is still a square
Shape names go wrong when the shape is turned, stretched or sits next to look-alikes such as a star or a heart.
Rectangle versus square
A square has four equal sides; a rectangle has long and short sides. Young children use the two words loosely.
Everyday shapes in the mix
Stars and hearts show up in drawings but are not the shapes of the lesson. The answer choices include them, so children must pick the real one.
Turned shapes
A square turned on a corner looks like a diamond. Children need to know that turning a shape does not change its name.
Each card names a shape and offers three pictures, with look-alikes mixed in. Children match the name and talk about sides and corners. A poster keeps the names on the wall.
