Gaps in the list
A child may know pre-primer and primer, but miss words from first and second. Gaps show up in sentences.
Look-alikes
Words like 'was' and 'saw', 'then' and 'them', 'where' and 'were' are mixed in the full list.
Memory, not decoding
Some words can't be sounded out. Children need many looks to learn them by sight.
