The problem
Skate, ripe, poke, prune: one rule, four vowels
Silent e works across all the vowels, but each one has its own sound. Children who learn a-e may not carry it over to the others.
Rule doesn't transfer
A child who reads skate may still read 'ripe' as 'rip'. Each vowel has to be learned.
u-e has two sounds
In 'prune', u says /oo/. In 'amuse', it says /yoo/. Long u is the trickiest.
Exceptions
Words like give and have look like silent e but are short. Children need to know some words break the rule.
Words with a-e, i-e, o-e and u-e are mixed, so children check the end of each word and then choose the right long vowel.
