The problem
Poke, alone, code: the o-e that hides in longer words
O-e gives a long o. Children who have learned it in short words may not spot it in longer ones like alone.
Pok or poke
Without the e, 'poke' reads as 'pock'. The e at the end changes the vowel.
Alone has two syllables
In 'alone', o-e sits in the second syllable. Children read 'a-lon' without the long o.
Exceptions
Words like done and come look like o-e but say short u. They break the rule.
Only o-e words are included, such as poke, alone and code. Children read the long o and see the pattern in short and longer words.
