Subtraction to 20 for 1st grade: 30 question slides with a type-in answer box, plus an answer key slide.
What’s inside this download
- 30 question slides, one question per slide
- A type-in answer box on every question
- A title slide and an answer key slide at the end
- One .pptx file — opens in Google Slides and PowerPoint
Why choose this over a free activity
- Close numbers and crossing ten
- Count back or count up

- No printing — works on a laptop, tablet or classroom screen
License and file format
- One .pptx file; upload it to Google Drive to open it in Google Slides
- One teacher or one household. Use it with your own students, this year and next
- Sharing the file itself needs a separate license

Why get the bundle
- Subtraction to 20 benefits from practice in many forms. Bingo, color-by-code and cards give children a lot of looks.
The problem
12 - 11: don't count back eleven
Counting back works for small take-aways, but it fails when the two numbers are close or when the numbers get bigger.
Counting back every time
For 12 - 11 a child counts back 11 steps and lands on the wrong number. Counting up from 11 is faster.
Crossing ten
13 - 5 asks a child to pass through 10. Counting back loses its place.
Not using addition
15 - 9 can be solved by thinking 9 + ? = 15. Most children do not see the link without help.
Facts to 20 give children a choice: count back for small take-aways, count up for close numbers. Each page supports both.
What’s inside
30 questions, one per slide.
Students type straight into the box — no printing, no cutting.
