Why get the bundle
- Subtraction to 5 pairs with Addition to 5 and Number Bonds to 5. A bundle lets children link them.
The problem
5 take away 2: what is left?
For a kindergartner, subtraction is a new idea. The minus sign has to mean taking some away and counting what is left.
Counting the part taken
In 5 - 2, a child counts the 2 they removed and answers 2.
What the minus sign means
The sign is just a mark until a child sees a group get smaller.
Small hands, small sets
Five is small enough for fingers. Short sets keep it from feeling like too much.
Facts within 5 are small enough to act out. Cards and a poster show take-away with objects, then the number sentence.
