Why get the bundle
- Tally marks tie counting to skip counting by fives. A bundle lets children see both ideas together.
The problem
Four lines, then a slash: that is five
Tally marks are a counting code. The fifth mark crosses the first four, and children who have not seen that count it as another line.
The slash is the fifth
A child counts four upright lines plus a slash as five lines, so 5 becomes 6. The slash joins the bundle, it is not a separate count.
Counting every mark again
Without grouping in fives, a child recounts each line each time. The bundles are there to save counting.
Where one bundle ends
Six tally marks look like one bundle and one stray line. Children need to see 5 and 1 more.
Cards show tally marks from 1 to 20 and ask how many. Children count fives first, then the extras, instead of tapping each line.
