Why get the bundle
- Teen numbers link counting, ten frames and place value. A bundle with those sets lets children see the ten inside each teen.
The problem
Thirteen is a ten and three, not 'one and three'
Teen words hide the place value. Children say thirteen and write 31, or read 13 as a 1 and a 3 instead of a ten and three ones.
Writing teens backward
Thirteen sounds like three comes first, so some children write 31. The ten is on the left, even though the word hides it.
The ten is hidden
In 13, the 1 stands for a whole ten. Children who read it as the number one do not see the ten and three.
Eleven and twelve
These two do not sound like ten and one or ten and two, so the pattern is harder to see.
Each card shows a teen number and asks for it as one ten and some ones. Children build it with a full ten frame and counters, then say it aloud.
