The problem
Six dots, and she still counts from one
A ten frame is built to show numbers as five and some more. Kindergartners who count every dot never learn to see that.
Counting by ones every time
Shown 6 dots, a child taps 1 to 6 even though a full row of five is sitting there. Seeing five and one more is quicker.
Counting the empty squares
A frame with 3 dots has 7 blanks. Some children count the whole frame and say ten, so the dots must be what counts.
Not noticing how many to fill it
Ten is a full frame, so 7 dots leave 3 empty. Children miss that the blanks tell how many more make ten.
Cards show dots on a ten frame from 1 to 10. Children say the number, using the full row of five as an anchor, and a poster shows how each number fills the frame.

Questions
Before you buy.
What does a child need to know first?
Counting to 10 is enough. The frames help children move from counting to seeing numbers.
Is there an assessment?
Yes. The set has check pages so you can see who reads the frame at a glance and who still counts each dot.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. 3 PDFs with 20 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
