The problem

The short hand tells the hour, the long hand points up

The two hands on a clock look alike, and children read the long hand first. At o'clock the long hand sits on the 12 and the short hand tells the time.

Reading the long hand as the hour

At 3:00 the long hand points to 12 and the short hand to 3. A child who reads the long hand says twelve.

What o'clock means

When the long hand is straight up, the time is just the hour. Children add minutes or write 3:30.

Writing the time

3 o'clock is written 3:00. Children leave off the zeros or write 300.

Each card shows an on-the-hour time. Children find the short hand, say the hour, check that the long hand is at the top and write the time with 00. A poster shows the hands and the words.
